Cyberpunk 2077 _ 's release and current plans have become akin to those of a pre-release version of a title. CD Projekt Red's ambitious follow-up from _The Witcher 3 has seen scrutiny for numerous aspects of its development, but the criticism has reached a fever pitch as it relates to the state of the game's launch. Numerous bugs, glitches, and problems with the game's programming have led to CD Projekt Red reevaluating its release schedules, delaying DLC and multiplayer content drops while promising fixes for these critical issues.

Released in December of 2020, Cyberpunk remained one of the most anticipated titles of the year through its entire production cycle. Cyberpunk 2077 's initial announcement came in 2012, when it was revealed to be in production. Development for the title began in 2016 after The Witcher 3 's Blood and Wine DLC launched as a proper farewell to the story of Geralt of Rivia. The development of Cyberpunk 2077 was not without its own hurdles, as the game saw numerous delays along the way. Originally slated for April, Cyberpunk found itself sliding eventually to its December release. Through each delay, Cyberpunk 2077 was undergoing extensive fixes and fine-tuning in an effort to make its new deadline. Anxious fans finally got their hands on the title, but what they got fell below the expectations CD Projekt Red had set. As a result of CD Projekt Red's mismanagement of its expectations, combined with the enormity of Night City and all it contains, the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 found itself having more in common with a title released in early access than the successful release of a company's latest flagship title.

Cyberpunk 2077: Being Transparent With Game Development

One of the biggest issues of Cyberpunk 's current state is the lack of transparency from CD Projekt Red through the course of development. CD Projekt Red made a promise earlier in the development of cyberpunk 2077 site that its developers would not be forced into a mandatory state of crunch time. As development neared its end, CD Projekt Red walked back this promise and had its dev team begin working under crunch time following three different sets of delays. Crunch time was only one of several problems that would follow the development of the title.

Cyberpunk 2077 's release had its fair share of problems on all platforms as numerous bugs and glitches showed up. However, there was a noticeable disconnect in the product players received on the PC and upgraded hardware compared to the product played on the base PS4 and Xbox One platforms . In a statement, CD Projekt Red apologized for " not showing the game on base last-gen consoles before it premiered ". The general performance issues of the title on consoles resulted in both Microsoft and Sony extending full refunds for the title, with Sony delisting the title from the PlayStation Store outright.

In an emergency board meeting, it was stated by CD Projekt Red's CEO Adam KiciƄski that the company had " underestimated the scale and complexity of the issues. " By overlooking the size of the game while simultaneously hiding the game's performance on base last-gen hardware, CD Projekt Red has been forced to abandon its original release plans for the game and putting the game on what amounts to an early access development schedule.
